With the delay of Path of Exile 2, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) is making key changes to the way accounts and microtransactions work in order to provide a seamless experience across both Path of Exile games. Despite the delay, Path of Exile 2 remains one of 2024’s most eagerly anticipated ARPGs, with fans eager to see how GGG’s new take on the genre stacks up against competitors like Diablo 4. To improve continuity between Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2, GGG has taken the opportunity to streamline account functionality, especially around microtransactions and player identity.

A Unified Microtransaction System Across Two Games

One of the main goals of GGG’s changes is to support shared microtransactions across Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2. According to GGG, microtransactions purchased in either game will be accessible in both, allowing players to continue enjoying their cosmetic purchases across both PoE and PoE 2. This move is designed to ensure players don’t lose access to previously acquired items as they transition between the  PoE 2 Gold two games, fostering a smoother experience as GGG launches new content across both games simultaneously.

This continuity does require some adjustments to the account system, as each game will operate on its own league schedule. GGG plans to offer separate leagues for Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2, with a staggered release schedule that will allow players to engage in fresh content on both games without overwhelming the community with back-to-back launches. The ability to share microtransactions between games also means players won’t need to repurchase items, a decision likely to build goodwill among the fanbase as they navigate the new game.

Account System Update: Usernames and Tags

As part of these changes, GGG is revising the account naming structure. The developer is introducing account tags to make it easier for new and returning players to choose their usernames. The addition of unique numbers to usernames—a system used by platforms like Blizzard’s Battle.net—will allow multiple users to have the same base name, distinguished by an appended identifier. This modification addresses an ongoing challenge for Path of Exile, where popular usernames were often unavailable, forcing new players to try several alternatives to find a unique name.

The new system will allow players to have their preferred usernames while still accommodating GGG’s large and active player base. This is expected to create a more welcoming experience for newcomers who can quickly get started with a name they want rather than settling for a less desirable option after multiple attempts.

Preparing for Cross-Play and Enhanced Accessibility

The account adjustments are also part of a broader effort to enable cross-play between Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 on all supported platforms. Cross-play functionality is a major addition for Path of Exile 2, allowing players on different systems to engage with each other seamlessly, regardless of whether they’re playing the first or second game. Cross-progression, another feature that GGG is aiming to  POE 2 Currency implement, will further increase accessibility, letting players switch between platforms without losing their progress or items.

Continued Support for Both Games

Interestingly, GGG’s approach isn’t to phase out Path of Exile 1 upon the release of its sequel. Instead, they are committed to running both games simultaneously, with separate development and content cycles to keep both titles engaging. This decision is a testament to Path of Exile 1's strong player base, which has grown steadily since its launch in 2013. By maintaining support for the original game, GGG is catering to long-time fans while also offering an updated experience in Path of Exile 2.
