World of Warcraft Cataclysm Classic: Archaeology Guide
World of Warcraft (WoW) Cataclysm Classic brings players back to one of the most transformative expansions in the game’s history. Not only did Cataclysm overhaul many aspects of Azeroth, but it also introduced a new secondary profession: Archaeology. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Archaeology in WoW Cataclysm Classic, from learning the profession to maximizing its rewards.
Introduction to Archaeology
Archaeology is a secondary profession, similar to Fishing and First Aid, meaning it can be learned regardless of your character's primary professions. It offers a unique way to WoW Cataclysm Classic Gold explore the world, uncover ancient artifacts, and earn unique rewards. While some players see it as a relaxing way to pass the time, others pursue it for the valuable items and lore it provides.
How to Learn Archaeology
To begin your journey as an archaeologist, you must find an Archaeology Trainer. These trainers can be found in major cities across Azeroth, Outland, and Northrend:
Stormwind (Alliance)
Orgrimmar (Horde)
Shattrath City (both factions)
Dalaran (both factions)
Once you have found a trainer, speak with them to learn the Archaeology profession. This will grant you access to the Archaeology menu and the essential Survey spell, which is used to locate and excavate dig sites.
Understanding Dig Sites
After learning Archaeology, you will see four dig sites appear on your map in the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. As you level up your Archaeology skill, additional dig sites will become available in Outland, Northrend, and the Cataclysm zones (level 80-85 areas).
Types of Dig Sites
There are several types of dig sites based on the races that left the artifacts:
Night Elf
Dwarf
Troll
Fossil
Nerubian (Northrend)
Vrykul (Northrend)
Orc (Outland)
Draenei (Outland)
Tol’vir (Cataclysm zones)
Each dig site is marked on your map, and you can have up to four active dig sites in each continent at any time.
How to Excavate Dig Sites
To excavate a dig site, travel to its location and use the Survey spell. This will place a telescope and a small flag at your feet, indicating the direction and approximate distance to the artifact fragment. The color of the light on the telescope helps you gauge how close you are:
Red: Far away
Yellow: Closer
Green: Very close
Move in the direction indicated by the telescope and use Survey again until you find the artifact fragment. Each dig site contains three fragments, and you can collect up to 200 fragments of each type in your Archaeology journal.
Leveling Archaeology
Archaeology skill is leveled by collecting fragments and solving artifacts. You gain skill points each time you collect a fragment and when you solve an artifact. To maximize your skill gains, follow these steps:
Collect Fragments: Travel to dig sites and use Survey to collect fragments. Each successful collection will grant you skill points.
Solve Artifacts: Once you have enough fragments, you can solve an artifact from your Archaeology menu. Solving an artifact will grant a significant number of skill points and potentially reward you with valuable items.
Efficient Leveling Tips
Start in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor: Focus on dig sites in these continents until you reach skill level 300.
Move to Outland and Northrend: After reaching skill level 300, start working on dig sites in Outland and Northrend to continue leveling.
Cataclysm Zones: Once you reach skill level 450, you can start excavating dig sites in the Cataclysm zones.

Wisp Amulet: Another Night Elf artifact that transforms you into a wisp.
Completing Your Archaeology Collection
As you progress, you’ll complete many common artifacts, but the real thrill comes from discovering rare artifacts. Each type of artifact has a chance to be rare, and these often come with unique models and special effects.
Common vs. Rare Artifacts
Common Artifacts: These are the standard items you’ll complete most frequently. They can be sold to vendors for gold or kept for cosmetic purposes.
Rare Artifacts: These are much harder to come by and often have special properties or appearances. Rare artifacts provide the most exciting rewards and are highly sought after by collectors.
